CRANES UP CLOSE

I see Sandhill Cranes often when I’m shooting in farm country this time of year.  I saw six of them together in one spot but they were too far away to get good pictures.  I moved on to the field where I often see my favorite pair.  The farmer had replaced the corn crop with soybeans this year.  I found my two regulars feasting away, one pecked and ate while the other stood guard.  It was great to see them up close.

  1. Another friend tells me you do not want to get TOO close! I've heard they can be "aggressive" on golf courses, too. Here in Leelanau, though, we seldom see them in crowds, and every sight is a pleasure, isn't it? Or even just the sound overhead....

  2. Yes, it is a pleasure every time I see them. Luckily, I have a 500 mm lens so I can still stay a safe distance and get good pictures. When I approach, they sometimes walk away too so I get their message, loud and clear.
